What is Polyvagal Theory?
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, is not a therapy in itself, but a fundamental model of our nervous system. It describes how our autonomic nervous system responds to signals of safety and danger through three states:
- Ventral Vagal: The state of calm, connection, and safety.
- Sympathetic: The ‘fight or flight’ response (mobilization).
- Dorsal Vagal: The ‘freeze’ or shutdown response (immobilization).
In therapy, we use this ‘roadmap’ to recognize which state you’re in and help you return more often to the safe, ventral state.

Why Polyvagal Theory?
Understanding Polyvagal Theory is essential because it removes ‘shame’ from the equation. Your reactions — such as fear, anger, or freezing — are not signs of weakness, but biological survival responses from your nervous system.
By understanding your nervous system, you learn to recognize ‘glimmers’ (signals of safety) and actively help your body regulate itself. It forms the foundation beneath methods like SE and NARM, and gives you back a sense of agency over your own wellbeing.
Who is this suitable for?
Insight into Polyvagal Theory is valuable for everyone, but especially if you recognize yourself in the following:
You feel overwhelmed by emotions
You feel ‘stuck’ in anxiety or emotional numbness
You struggle to relax
You want to better understand why you react the way you do
What can Polyvagal Theory bring you?
Understanding your nervous system is the first step toward change. It gives you insight and compassion for yourself. Instead of fighting against your reactions, you learn to work with them. Together, we use this knowledge as a compass to build your resilience and restore your underlying sense of safety.
I help you with, among other things:
Insight into your own triggers
Compassion for your survival responses
Tools to regulate yourself
I follow online body-oriented therapy with Ehsan and I am very satisfied. Ehsan creates a safe atmosphere in which I can share openly. He listens in a way that makes me feel genuinely heard and understood, while also asking exactly the right questions to help me get out of my head and connect more with what I feel physically and emotionally. Through this I discover a great deal about my emotions, my own needs, and what I truly want. What strikes me is how skilled Ehsan is at picking up signals from my posture even through an online video call, which makes the sessions incredibly effective. Compared to previous therapies, I have made far more progress here. I wholeheartedly recommend his body-oriented therapy.
Ehsan created a calm and safe setting that allowed me to access different layers of my feelings. He had a real sense of me and asked exactly the questions I needed to understand myself better.
The sessions with Ehsan were a truly special experience. They gave me a safe space to connect with myself and with emotions I wasn’t consciously aware of. His calm way of guiding made it easy for me to understand my own unconscious patterns.
The sessions with Ehsan are remarkable experiences. Through the SE sessions and my contact with Ehsan, I’ve become calmer, stronger, and more self-aware. Ehsan creates the time and space to really experience your body and emotions. Working together with him, I gain greater insight into how I function — my body, my thoughts — what I need, and I’m learning to pursue my life goals with more intention.
I am very happy with the therapy I received from Ehsan. For me it was the first time that I felt really safe during therapeutic sessions. This had a positive influence on the quality of the sessions. All so we had quite a few online sessions. Although I was a little sceptic on forehand, we reached the same quality in the sessions. Ehsan is really good in focusing on the details. It made that I could really feel what was going on in my body and mind. Thank you so much for this Ehsan!
When I started working with Ehsan, I have already done lots of somatic work and wasn’t sure how much value I would get from the work. It’s been more than 2 years and now I consider working with Ehsan a big and regular part of my ongoing healing journey. His ability to combine multiple modalities stood out, and helped me go deep into levels I haven’t explored before. I definitely recommend Ehsan’s work!

Frequently asked questions about Polyvagal Theory
Browse our frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is Polyvagal Theory and how does it help with stress?
Polyvagal Theory offers insight into how your autonomic nervous system works and why you freeze, flee, or fight in certain situations. By understanding how your vagus nerve responds to safety and danger, we work together to help you move from a state of survival back to one of calm and connection.
Who is this approach suitable for?
This approach is highly effective if you struggle with chronic stress, anxiety, or difficulty with social connection. It’s also useful if you experience unexplained physical symptoms or notice that you’re often ‘switched on’ — Polyvagal Theory offers practical tools to help regulate your nervous system.
What do we do during a session?
We map out how your nervous system responds — your personal profile. We then do simple exercises to stimulate your vagus nerve and calm your system. This gives you greater control over your emotions and reactions in everyday life.
Can I learn this online as well?
Yes, Polyvagal Theory lends itself very well to online therapy. Much of the work involves psychoeducation (understanding how it works) and practical exercises you can apply at home, in your own safe environment, with my guidance. Feel free to get in touch for more information.
